AMERICAN PAIN FOUNDATION
September is PAIN AWARENESS MONTH! Months of planning are coming to fruition as
nationwide efforts and local activities are underway to call attention to the
plight of millions of Americans who are suffering needlessly in pain each day. I
am writing to ask for your support for this month’s activities. Will you
please make a gift today to help fight this suffering? [A special thank you to
those of you who have already made your gift this year!] Click here now to visit
our giving page: http://www.painfoundation.org/donate/.
We are excited to share just some of the ways APF is fighting for those
suffering with pain:
“Conquering Pain Together” is a new public awareness campaign designed to
bring people together nationwide and address the issues important to people
struggling with pain during September’s Pain Awareness Month. This campaign is
designed for everyone to become involved! Professional presentations and
community events are planned in communities throughout the country to highlight
the need for improved access to appropriate and effective pain care. The
Conquering Pain Together site directs visitors to an online “I COMMIT”
petition (don’t wait, sign on NOW!) and features a list of planned local
activities to bring the topic of pain to the forefront. The site also includes
an easy-to-use toolkit with materials to raise awareness about pain issues in
communities and information about what YOU can do for the first-ever National
Day of Action scheduled for September 26th. If you have not yet, I encourage you
to visit
http://www.conqueringpaintogether.org/ today!
The fall issue of Pain Community News, our esteemed quarterly newsletter, is
chock-full of inspirational and informative articles. If we have your mailing
address, you probably already received your copy. If not, the PCN is available
to you online here. Sign up to be an APF member today.
APF is publishing our first book! Exit Wounds and its NEW companion website:
http://www.exitwoundsforveterans.org/ are both a guide to pain management for
veterans and their family members and also the inspiring story of how one man,
with the support of his family and fellow veterans, fought to survive and even
thrive despite his traumatic injuries and painful path to recovery. Author Derek
McGinnis, APF Military/Veterans Team Member and Amputee Advocate, is a veteran
of the war in Iraq who sustained traumatic brain injury, extensive shrapnel
wounds, damage to his eye and amputation of his left leg above the knee. Public
release of the book is scheduled for later this month.
We have listened to your suggestions and have improved our Web site to include
easy to navigate categories and integrated search features. Visit us at
http://www.painfoundation.org/
We have upgraded our PainAid chat room. PainAid offers regularly scheduled
real-time chats on a range of issues, moderated by PainAid staff and volunteers.
Special topic chats are featured throughout the year. Please check the schedule
for a list of current chats.
APF continues to be deeply involved in advocacy on the federal and state levels.
We worked hard to develop recommendations for a REMS (Risk Evaluation and
Mitigation Strategy) that protects the needs of people with pain, while seeking
to prevent the non-medical use of these important medications. We have developed
a position statement and continue to work to address the recent FDA Advisory
Committee’s recommendations concerning acetaminophen.
APF’s “Power Over Pain Action Network” continues to be active and visible
nationwide, not only planning and executing activities for September is Pain
Awareness Month, but working locally to improve legislation for fellow citizens
suffering from pain. POPAN leaders Gwenn Herman and Mary French are working on
securing a Pain Commemorative Stamp with the U.S. Postal Service. Click here
to learn how you can assist them in reaching their goal.
Please, make your gift today at www.painfoundation.org/donate. We need your help
to continue this fight. Know that your gift will help millions of individuals
live better lives. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Will Rowe
