Fibromyalgia patients with IBS – Needed for study of glutamate-free diet's effect, at Oregon Health & Science University, Portland
March 11, 2009
The Oregon Health and Science University in Portland is studying the effects of a glutamate additive (MSG)-free diet on symptoms of Fibromyalgia with IBS. Their 10-week trial will determine effects on musculoskeletal pain, gut pain, day-to-day functioning, and IBS quality of life.
The placebo-controlled interventional study will place subjects on a 1-month glutamate-free elimination diet. (They estimate that half to two-thirds of patients will respond favorably, and that symptoms will reoccur when glutamate is reintroduced in phase 2.)
The researchers seek men and women aged 18-75 who:
• Fulfill criteria for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Fibromyalgia (FM)
• Live in the greater Portland metro area,
• Have transportation to and from the study site,
• Have access to e-mail
• Are willing to discontinue medications with bowel altering side effects.
