Posted by Heidi/Mermie Dr. Daniel J. Clauw, MD, one of the nation's experts in fibromyalgia care and research and the director of the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor), has written an important article updating physicians on "the evolving study of Fibromyalgia's nature and treatment." Geared towards doctors but written in language accessible to patients, this article is entitled Fibromyalgia: Update on Mechanisms and Management and cites more than 30 published studies. It was initially intended to be an educational 'Grand Rounds' presentation for fellows in Rheumatology at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center, but was subsequently published in the April 2007 issue of the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology. This comprehensive article includes discussion of the negative and positive impacts of The American College of Rheumatology criteria for Fibromyalgia, published in 1990. It also discusses the misdiagnosis of male fibromyalgia patients, the physiology and pathology of fibromyalgia, the biologic underpinnings of the illness, and the subgroups of fibromyalgia patients . The author lists key characteristics of fibromyalgia patients, and reviews the current knowledge and theory on pain processing abnormalities, testing technologies, and the use of various therapies and medications.fmblog-wellnesstrainresearchtream~M~
