I'm not sure if it's the same situation as the North Carolina, South Dakota, and Iowa class ships being able to interchange shells (maybe the Colorado class as well?)
My educated guess here is that this difference reflects a change in shell handling. I doubt Alaska was storing projectiles nose down as was down in ye olde days.
The guns in the Colorados, NCs, SODAKs, and Iowas could fire the same projectiles but the Colorados could not handle the same projectiles.
