Just for the sake of argument, let's say the crew intended to hit the bridge and make it look like an accident.
Reports say that 2 local harbor pilots were aboard. I am ignorant of how they direct the ship - Are they directly commanding heading, engine speed, rudder angle etc.? Or simply advising the captain, who then gives the orders the crew?
I ask because the ship is nearly impossible to deliberately maneuver without power. So they if they wanted to hit the pylon I would think they would have had to set the ship up very carefully and deliberately before cutting power. And even then it seems very difficult. One would think it would be impossible if the harbor pilots were directly conning the ship, and even if they weren't I would think they would notice any funny business.
Supposedly the ship lost power twice so maybe they needed a course correction!
(I am not seriously advocating that it was deliberate, this is more of a thought experiment)
No matter how bad your commute, at least you aren't on the Baltimore Beltway. A container ship (Singapore flagged) hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge on I695 and it collapsed into the Patapsco River. Search and Rescue have pulled 2 folks out of the water so far and they're looking for at least 7. Multiple vehicles plus workers on the bridge went into the water.
