However, the comparison has been made to the equivalent on the much older Golden Gate Bridge. That doesn't prove that the GG bridge would have survived such a collision any the better.
My understanding is that civil engineering, including bridge design, included exceptionally large safety factors. Perhaps this is one feature that could be addressed in the inquiry.
Well, the container ships of the mid 70's were not the size they are now - they were much smaller and the dolphins were sufficient at the time. That's not a design fault, that's simply obsolesence.
