In the 1970 US Census, 87.5% of Americans identified themselves as "white". But note that in 1970, "white" included Mexicans and Puerto Ricans, who today might be more inclined to identify themselves as "Hispanic" or "Latino" rather than white. It should also be noted that many people who live in the American Southwest who today might identify themselves as "Hispanic" or "Latino" have always lived in the American Southwest. They are indigenous people. They are not immigrants.
