In the case of my Dad, he was a 17 year old who enlisted right after Pearl Harbor, went through an expedited training at Great Lakes, and was sent off to Pearl Harbor. After a lovely month of loading ammo at Camp Andrews, he was one of 27 men assigned to the Farragut (all with a last name starting with “R”. He was immediately assigned to the forward fire room and the rest as they say is history!

I recall a "Sea Story" of a wet behind the ears farm boy who found himself in the recruiter's office considering a new career. The old chief behind the desk asked him what he would like to do in the navy. The boy responded
"I donno". The chief responded, "How would you like to be a fireman"? The boy, seeing an image of the local firefighters sitting around the station playing cards and occasionally polishing the engine responded "That would be great"! The truth would soon be realized.
I’m looking for some background information on why the US Navy created the WT3C rating and how crewman were chosen for training in that role in WW 2. Any help or sources you know of would be greatly appreciated.
Happy Modeling!
