Re: Oooh ! Oooh ! I'd love to agree w/ you ... but ...
The Scharnhorsts were absurdly over-armoured for what they were. Thicker armour than a Bismarck...
And the Alaskas were not battlecruisers, just extra super-duper heavy cruisers for doing heavy cruiser jobs. Too much ship for the mission, as it turned out. The Baltimores were cruiser enough at a fraction of the cost.
... the Scharnhorsts were armored like a battleship .. a veritable citadel. The Alaskas, as much as I love 'em, were only armored like cruisers. I fear they would succumb to battle damage first :-( IMHO ... Mark :-}
I believe the Alaska was considered a Battle cruiser also. Without checking the game stats, I believe the Alaska is the better ship, only because of the larger guns. It might be a good battle. There was a plan to change the triple eleven inch to double fifteen guns. That might give the Germans the edge. Could be very interesting. Will have to play it both ways.
American Alaska class "Large Cruiser" vs. German Scharnhorst class "Battle-cruiser / Small battleship"
