Re: Scharnhorst wins hands down in my opinion.
I read some where (probably here!) recently that US armour was not as resistant to penetration than some other navies'. Gaming rules should take this into account.
Agreed, but Alaska's belt was only 9 inches, Scharnhorst would probably penetrate it before Alaska could do the same to Scharnhorst.
Checked the performance of the 11 inch and 12 inch guns on Navweapons. Looks like the 12 inch was an excellent weapon and much better than the 11 inch (Navweapons, if I read it right, gave the 12 inch a better penetration than the DoY's 14 inch guns at similar ranges), but I still think Scharnhorst had a significant edge being more heavily armoured.
If I knew what game Larry was using, it would be good to check it out. Sadly, my ancient copy of Fighting Steel, updated with the NWS patch is long gone.
Scharnhorst was better armored than Alaska, but not good enough against the Duke of York....
Scharnhorst lacked a sufficient upper belt and that's what sealed her fate against DOY.
Just my 2p worth, but Scharnhorst was better armoured, and just about as fast. However, radar might have clinched it in favour of Alaska.
American Alaska class "Large Cruiser" vs. German Scharnhorst class "Battle-cruiser / Small battleship"
