Re: USS North Carolina BB-55 question
The Northampton class cruisers with their heavy tripod masts were frequently mistaken for battleships by the Japanese.
Funny you mention this I was just reading a book disaster at Savo it seem the Japanese thought the Chicago was a battleship. Seems they thought it was the Texas.
While the North Carolina participated in the Guadalcanal Landings August,1942. Most of my references state mostly that this battleship escorted the 3 carriers assigned to the Guadalcanal landings.
Yet one book lists the Japanese aerial reconnaissance report on the landing that a battleship was seen off the beach head. Did the North Carolina provide gunfire support for the marines landings?
