Re: Fore and Aft usually
I noticed on the three ships I served on that the Engineer Officer had a rack that went athwartships and the rest that I saw were fore and aft. Never went to the effort to look in every stateroom and berthing compartment, but it seemed to be a pattern on a CG-26, an FF and CV-62.
athwartships would be much worse. I have slept on 26 US ships from an ARS to a CVN including a SSBN, 1 Italian CV, 1 British, 3 Canadian DDH, and 1 Dutch and have visited countless others - all had for and aft bunks. I even slept in a pipe rack on USS Guadalcanal (LPH-7)
Also most ships have fore and aft ladders but the Canadian Tribals had athwarship ladders with low hand rails - not fun in heavy seas.
