Iím no expert, and someone please correct me if I am wrong, but seeing as you have not gotten an answer to this, Iíll chime in. I believe what you are referring to is the zinc chromate undercoating or primer on the ship. The color is a garish greenish/yellow. You may be able to confirm and see some color photos by googling ďzinc chromate ship primer hullĒ or something along those lines. I hope Iíve steered you correctly on this. Good luck!
War time photos of Yorktown Class aircraft carriers often show extensive weathering along the water line. In black and white photos this appears to be white, but I question that is what it actually was.
I am interested in opinions about what the color really was.
