That might very well explain things timing wise. Matson clearly was operating the ship at that time (still belonged to the USMC but Matson managed and operated) and had renamed it "Hawaiian Shipper" when they commenced with its operation. In convoy it could have been a mis-ID of the "Hawaiian Shipper" by someone familiar with it, or had served on it as the "Empire Fulmar".
I found some information on ConvoyWeb, concerning the WS series of convoys. Our ship sailed in several of these, such as WS21P carrying "supplies for the 8th Army", 5th August 1942 was using the name Hawaiian Shipper again.
