Re: Baltimore vs Sheer
What kind of shell was Warsprite shooting? A armor piercing shell would do that. A high explosive round would explode and decimate anyone on deck, not to mention the funnel and anything around it.
If you know of a better table top gaming system please let me know. Go to Panzerschiffe.com It is the game I have played for years. I also thought the Baltimore would win hands down. You can argue gun size, armor, speed, or anything else for that matter. Those are the results I came up with. In this game a 11 inch shell does more damage than the 8 inch shell. You still have to hit the target.
The Warsprite hit an Italian ship over 14K yards and did no damage. The shell went through the funnel and didn't explode, but it did hit the target! Amazing gunnery at it's best......just saying
Baltimore can throw more weight per minute broadside 12,060lbs with her main guns http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_8-55_mk12-15.php
compared to Scheer's 9,921 lbs main guns.
Scheer has only 2 main gun turrets 1 fore & 1 aft compared to Baltimore's 2 forward main turrets & 1 aft. I'd take a Baltimore before using a Scheer.
Using Panzerschiffe game rules, the Scheer is the clear winner. The only battle she lost is when she closed with the Baltimore. The Scheer can easily keep a broadside to the Baltimore, which has to close to get her secondaries into action. The Baltimore must charge the Scheer, she cannot go toe to toe with her main weapons, and her speed advantage did not help.
Ships started at 12 miles apart bow to bow, and fought until one of the ships was sunk.
Who knows what would really happen, but using the game values, that was the outcome.
I will try to answer any questions you might have as best as I can.
