You miss the point Lars. The British were only using guns during the battle, probably to get even for the Hood. Bismark was torpedoed after the surface battle. The Germans might have, if anybody of rank was left, thought that they might lose her as a prize.
There is an old saying that if want to let air in, use guns and bombs. If you want to let water in use torpedoes.
Not being attacked with torpedoes, it is possible the Germans thought they might be boarded. It does sound very unlikely but not impossible.
I think the Dorsetshire fired the last shots, (torpedoes) of the battle as the British capitol ships retired.
Yes, that may be the reason for the crew attempting to scuttle the ship, but at the same time the Royal Navy try to sink her with the torpedo attack by HMS Dorsetshire. The wreck would not have survived.
