Japanese Auxiliary Cruisers

The link below about landing barges led me to roll through Combinedfleet's site and see the activities of Japanese Auxiliary cruisers particularly the two, HOKOKU and AIKOKU MARU. Any published work available dealing with Japanese Aux. Cruiser operations? Particularly the forecast need, design requirements, etc?
Where they inspired by the use of AMCs or disguised raiders? That is was effort made to disguise the armament when they were on operation? Appears they operated as an actual cruiser squadron. Working in pairs on ops. based on CF TROMs.
Well it is an interesting story. I understand the Italians tried using AMCs as well in WW2. Did not go well. Spanish Nationalist fleet did and had positive results in the SCW.
