I agree, for the price and for what you get I always buy the GMM set if it's been produced for the particular ship I'm building. GMM is right up there with White Ensign Models PE for being easiest to use and work with, and having good instructions. I have the GMM set for my Academy Indianapolis and it's a very good set. For my purposes GMM or WEM are the best bang for the buck, I buy brass barrels separately. PE is necessary for a well detailed model but to be honest I don't like working with PE which is why I like GMM and WEM PE sets. That being said, you get much more stuff with the Pontos set. You can practically replace all of the smaller parts, gun barrels and masts in the kit with a Pontos set. I have quite a few Pontos sets and they are beautiful but the only ones I've actually used were on my Academy Warspite and my USS Wisconsin 1991 builds. My other Pontos sets will be sold off, not because they aren't good quality but because I find them a little bit difficult to use, with hard to use instructions because of being printed so small, and because I don't use everything in the sets and a lot gets wasted. Their sets are overkill for my purposes. So it comes down to how much effort and detail you want to put into your build.
The last Loren Perry effort and it does not disappoint! As always, it gives you what you need, nothing more, not too complicated, extremely refined etching, great fit, outstanding instructions.
GMM has been and will always be my first choice, if available.
So I find I'll have a few months on my hand to actually build something. I have an Academy model of the Indianapolis and after doing a lot of reading I cant make up my mind on which is the best photo etch set to use. Which ones have you guys used to build this kit?? Thanks in advance.
