Long range plan to drydock
Yes, the long range plan is to drydock Olympia at the former Philadelphia Navy Yard. They developed a new steel epoxy that by using watertight boxes along the waterline have repair at least half the hull. Still needs the drydock though for permanent repairs.
Sections of the ship that formerly flooded with the tide, are now open to the public. Jesse Leibowitz (former curator) did miracles with that ship. And the new curator is continuing in his footsteps.
The major problem is to get her out of the marina, which is silted with only 10 feet of navigable water, it has to be dredged to 20 feet. About $20 million. That's the holdup.
I can't imagine how horrible a state her hull must be in by now.
Thought some of you might enjoy seeing the work being done to restore Olympia to her former glory.
Remember you can donate to the Olympia - just mark the Independence Seaport Museum FOR USS OLYMPIA.
