Your father efforts in the Guadalcanal campaign
shortened the war by at least a year. While it looked rather meager at the time - all that effort for one measly airfield - the campaign at Guadalcanal protected Australia, destroyed any further Imperial Japanese advances in the Solomon islands, and wore down the IJN.
It must have been nice to have been part of something great that will go down as a herculean effort in a titanic struggle.
The allied offensive begins in the Pacific with the invasion of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and adjacent islands. I know I mention this every year. I do this to honor the memory of my father and his comrades in the 1st Marine Parachute Battalion who landed on Gavutu.
