As opposed to 'chemical enhancement' more like
the prevailing attitude at the time. Some folks are just sour losers, but there was still plenty of animosity and no love lost towards the Japanese from the 'greatest generation' during the 60's (and much later) either. And with good reason. They just did not express it in the same way.
That was Airfix's "surreal box art" phase. The EE Lightning box showed the pilot ejecting and the Buccaneer one showed it taking off under kamikaze attack by a Zero. I blame the Sixties - pretty sure there was some "chemical enhancement" of the artwork.
Much has been said about the poor taste on box art by Aoshima for their recent RN releases.... It appears Airfix sort of did the same thing with this kit of a Walrus:
