The Navy knew full well that the Omahas were fragile sisters, and kept well away in secondary areas until the period of overwhelming superiority. The Marblehead's story was a minor epic at the time when good news was rare, and her repair reflects that. If it had happened in 1945, she'd have been left in a dockyard to await scrapping.
