At Guadalcanal the APDs were crucial. With Japanese land base air raiding around noon every day and Japanese control of the seas at night Kelly Turner did not wish to risk his slow transports. APDs could come in fast for partial resupply of the Marines protecting Henderson Field. Since the APDs were dedicated conversions of destroyers, they were much more effective than the Japanese practice of loading standard destroyers with troops or supplies or towing supplies and hoping they would drift ashore. Any book on Guadalcanal should cover APD operations.
