: Yes USS GREGORY (DD-802) was modified to the
: Anti-Kamikaze Mod in 1945. She was repaired
: and modified at San Diego Naval Repair Base
: from 18 May to 30 August (or 5 September I
: found two dates in records) 1945 (the mod
: was done under protest from them ...
: "We aren't set-up to do that kind of
: work here"), one of only two FLETCHER's
: to get the Anti-Kamikaze Mod done there.
: GREGORY was decommissioned in this
: configuration and recommissioned in it.
: During March-June 1952 she was upgraded at
: the SFNSY with a tripod foremast, hedgehogs
: replacing the forward twin 40-mm mounts, and
: new radars. So she only served about a year
: in her WWII configuration.

: Three of my favorite Fletchers are Little,
: Gregory, and Calhoun. I have already built
: Calhoun and Little. Now I am about to start
: on Gregory.
: My question is did Gregory receive the late
: war refit by adding two quad 40mm's
: amidships while she was being repaired after
: damage suffered of Okinawa, or was this
: refit done when she recommissioned in 1951
: or shortly thereafter. There is a 1954
: picture of her with this refit, and
: retaining the pole mast.
: I ask because I would like to do her as
: recommissioned for Korea. My inclination is
: to think she got her redo before the close
: of WWII and this was her basic configuration
: when she recommissioned, but I am just not
: sure. Some of the Fletchers did not get the
: 40mm quad refit and were brought out of
: mothballs and served in much the same rig as
: they had in WWII.
