Lexingtons and Essexes firing to port?
Posted by bobby in npt on March 9, 2018, 17:10:23
Essex had (4?) single 5 inchers in portside galleries to compensate for the 5" turrets not being able to fire in that direction due to blast damage to the flight deck. Could the superfiring turrets fire to port?
Could Lexington fire to port at all? Did the USN have a contingency plan just in case?
Also, I recently heard heard an interview with a former commander of an Iowa class. He stated that the plan to keep terrorists from boarding by helicopter was to fire blanks from the main turrets to simply blast them out of the sky. Sounds like a sound plan. I forget who and which but would be more than happy to dig up the interview if anyone is interested.
