If we consider Midway,

three Illustrious would have embarked about 135 AC. They would be opposed by about 248 Japanese AC. Additionally, 135 AC would not be enough to do a search, form a credible strike force and provide a CAP simultaneously.
Historically, the three Yorktowns fielded about 233 AC.
: What would the outcome have been if:
: A- they were all Essex class
: B- they were all Illustrious class
: I think the answer would be:
: A- pretty much the way it turned out
: B- we would have run out of planes and it
