Both USN and IJN carrier doctrine were based on power projection. Being able to overwhelm the other side with aircraft. The downside of the RN designs was they carried a fraction of the airplanes that the US carriers did.
RN defenses were more passive, depending on their armor and AA fit, while the USN carriers depended more on their aircraft.
It is fortunate that the RN didn't have to face a Midway like battle as they probably would have been handled roughly. Armored decks wouldn't help against torpedoes.
