The Hobby Boss 1/700 LHD kits have catwalks and galleries which must be folded precisely and then attached to side of hull fighting gravity Not only that but their PE catwalks and galleries are all wrong. Had to purchase the Eduard offering to get proper catwalks and gallery walks. Gallery walk and above catwalk have to align perfectly.
With that being said yes it annoys the daylights out of me. I had to purchase a hold and fold, then a large rotating vise, and another device that creates curves and circles and search for a glue that would hold metal to plastic.
I do not mind doing towers and cranes things that you wish to stand out but in 1/700 you will not see the railings or most other PE features.
There are some manufacturers who just go photo-etch happy and I just close the box. As if they say " I give you this kit to pit your pursuit of perfection against our wish to go cheap and give you high level detail with your frustration".
The LHD kits I will do when I retire.
: I just got these two kits and here's my
: thoughts, for what its worth...
: No lower hulls doesn't bother me; I only
: build waterline anyway. New York's hull may
: not be correct, as others have posted, but
: it doesn't look horrible. Certainly not as
: bad as Hornet. It will make a nice contrast
: next to its sleek sister state battleship -
: New Jersey...
: I'm pretty sure New York's quad 40's did not
: have the rotating shields, but it looks like
: they can just be left off anyway. I'm also
: pretty sure Yorktown never had the
: "5" painted on her flight deck,
: but I'll let others confirm that.
: Overall I'm happy with 95% of these two
: kits. I hate the PE. I hate the fact that
: there are no plastic alternate parts
: included for those who can't or won't use
: PE. I know I am not the only one who feels
: this way because I have seen similar
: comments from others on this board.
: I build models for fun. PE is NOT fun. It is
: aggravating for someone like me who does not
: have the dexterity or eyesight to handle it
: properly. I do not have any desire to fiddle
: with PE funnel grilles, a simple plastic
: part with a grid I can put a flat black wash
: on looks just fine to me. The PE boat cranes
: are practically unusable for me.
: My hope is that one of the aftermarket
: suppliers (Steve from Model Monkey - I love
: your stuff!) will realize that there are
: enough people who can't or won't play with
: little fiddly PE pieces who would love to
: see slightly clunkier pieces of resin or
: plastic that are easier to handle. None of
: us is getting younger, and I don't have room
: to start over in 1/350. Tamiya's HMS Hood
: from the 1970's has very nice funnel caps...
: one piece, add a little flat black, looks
: fine for me. Trumpeter's Warspite I tried
: twice, mangled the PE both times, just
: painted the top of the funnel black and left
: it open.
: So if anybody out there is like me and would
: like a less accurate or refined, but easier
: to use piece, let your favorite aftermarket
: designer know... if enough of us ask, they
: will make it. The older kits have similar
: parts, they can't be impossible to make.
: My two cents... Jim Donnelly
