Earlier this year (in late June or early July) I purchased a number of newly released aftermarket parts for my Tom's Modelworks 1/350th 1941 USS WEST VIRGINIA, and promised Steve Larson (AKA "Model Monkey" on Shapeways) I'd post my thoughts on this board. Firstly - my apologies to Steve for not doing so earlier - life got in the way.
I purchased the following from Steve: The WEST VIRGINIA Superstructure Set; COLORADO class early 16" Turrets; with Barrels; separate Trunnions to use with brass barrels; Mk 19 Directors; Spotting Tops for both the Fore and Main-Mast; and a set of PENNSYLVANIA class Boat Crane "Masts" and Boat Crane Booms that I think I can modify into those used on the WEST VIRGINIA.
These sets/parts are exquisite in their detail, and should really enhance any model they're used on. For the superstructure set - the 01 Deck level (the main portion of this part) was designed to fit the the Blue Water Navy/Yankee Model Works kit, and is dimension-ally smaller than the Tom's kit, so the Number 2 16" Turret fouls the Conning Tower base. In order to use this part on a Tom's kit, some careful surgery will be required to lengthen and widen this part to accept the No. 2 Turret properly, without destroying that beautiful detail. From what I can determine, this part needs to be lengthened approximately 6.7 mm, and widened by approximately 4 mm, in order to properly fit the TMW kit.
The other parts are equally exquisite in their detail, especially the Boat Crane "Masts" and booms, and the turrets scale out correctly.
All-in-all, these parts are beautifully done. Just my thoughts, but Thanks Steve.
