I will do my best to take pictures and notes. Though I have done minor scratch building, I do not what I will find while building but we are all in on this adventure together.
Ship yard starts cutting steel in the AM
: If you have the time (and inclination) a few
: photos of the modifications you made would
: be very helpful.

: Last night I bashed the two Trumpeter kits
: Yorktown and Hornet. After much clipping of
: parts off of sprues I learned the hangar
: deck of Trumpeter Hornet (with its locating
: guides for hangar bulkheads) will fit the
: Yorktown hull. It has to be modified.
: 2 "L" shaped cut outs P/S are
: needed in the hangar floor to accommodate
: the beginning curves of the forward 5/38 gun
: galleries. Once done I have to slide the
: hangar deck into position from stern to bow
: and tap into flush position. The Hornet
: hangar floor now has all the locator guides
: for the hangar bulkheads and the proper
: openings. As I understand it, I am not
: shortening the hangar deck so the hangar
: bulkheads should come very very very close
: to matching the stationery curves of 5/38
: gun galleries of the Yorktown hull bow and
: Next comes the Hornet anchor deck for the
: bow. Obviously not made for the fine
: Yorktown bow. It overhangs. I looked at the
: rear of the piece and it has two rectangular
: deck extensions P/S to meet hangar deck.
: These I will shave back so anchor deck sits
: flush in bow.
: Fortunately Trumpeter did not invest much in
: detailing the Hornet as Yorktown with the
: lattice support structures under bow and
: stern of flight decks. So I have to
: recognize that I will have to position (play
: with) the flight deck so it matches supports
: of bow and stern while not masking the
: 5"38 gun galleries. It does appear that
: the Yorktown hull is slightly smaller in
: length and beam. Slightly! From what I am
: seeing there is enough room to build the bow
: and stern structures.
: Next come the 5"38 gun galleries. Since
: I already bashed the hull from the Yorktown
: kit I am holding onto those Yorktown gun
: galleries. Though molded exactly the same as
: those in Hornet, once the Hornet flight deck
: is positioned where I want it, those
: galleries (a slight smaller than Hornet's)
: may sit better in the Yorktown hull.
: As far as I can see once the Hornet hangar
: deck and anchor deck is in and flush, I
: follow the rest of the Hornet instructions
: and use Hornet parts.
: I am holding onto the parts of the bashed
: Yorktown kit for the Enterprise is yet to
: come and it's era is unknown. Those 20mm
: positions may come in handy.
: Now I dry fitted all and I may overlooked
: something but I am thinking because Yorktown
: was manufactured in such a way to
: accommodate future Enterprise it can be
: done. I will find out but I am reasonably
: sure this will work with some fitting and
: I don't see Trumpeter re-tooling the Hornet
: anytime soon especially since they just gave
: Skywave the rights to sell the Hornet kit
: under their name.
