...of a torpedo sticking out of Atlanta's surveyed hull but, rather her condition during battle. Amateur pleasure diving on wrecks long after the fact by unqualified observers represents a totally different perspective. We have instances of precisely this sort of event event occurring during the war, so the possibility exists that it is an event which could occur.
I'm reminded of the very caustic and personal attacks made on me by certain individuals--including Bob Henneman--when I suggested USS Porter was torpedoed by an errant TBF during Santa Cruz. I believe the general consensus now--as it was suspected back in '42--is that it did occur and a similar event definitely occurred up at Cape Engaño where a TBM had several destroyers playing Marco Polo with a torpedo until it exhausted its fuel.
