: ...is that Burchell was very keen to obtain
: prior support and permission of relevant
: authorities--both Indonesain and
: Australian--in his quest, unlike those folks
: who openly flaunt the spirit of the Law
: concerning War Graves--such as HMS Prince
: of Wales --and gloat about it.
: The dive on HMAS Perth by the Indonesians
: was carried out on the basis of governmental
: cooperation, none of which applies to those
: folks who dived upon, and entered, Prince
: of Wales . At the time these dives on
: Perth were made, the idea of wholesale
: salvage had not reared its head to any
: significant degree and most certainly the
: deed had not.
: Please let's not conflate the honorable
: activities of those who sought to preserve
: relics with the object of a public memorial
: with amateur photo shoots which have--by
: various means--triggered the plunder of
: wrecks, wrecks which have now disappeared
: from the seabed in virtually their entirety.
: In the first instance we are talking about
: legitimate, limited and honorable retrieval
: of archival items under controlled and
: officially sanctioned conditions; in the
: second instance, we're talking about
: wholesale plunder in the pursuit of profit
: with a callous disregard for anything else
: other than--perhaps--those photo shoots.
: As I'm sure you're aware, my questions
: regarding business activities vis-a-vis
: the wrecks of HMS Exeter and--what's
: left--of Perth still stand. In the last
: two or three weeks I've developed further
: information regarding these issues about
: which I'm very interested in assessing
: conflicting explanations.
