as well as the problems of shrinkage depending on mould temperature,environment temp and speed of production there is the matter of measurement of the real thing, i believe that the B17 was built to a tolerance of 8 inch wingspan!,so what was the tolerance for a carrier????? each piece of the steel would be different on a hot day compared to a cold one and as ships except LIBERTIES were not built in a day the fit of parts would lead to a slightly different size overall, to say nothing of environmental temp on the day! what is the change from arctic to tropics 1/2%????? Concorde and SR71 both grew well over 1% in high speed flight!
