: One of the purposes of having planes aboard
: cruisers and battleships - besides the
: obvious one of scouting - was to spot the
: fall of shot at long ranges. The plane would
: be up high and radio targeting corrections
: back to the ship, considerable effort was
: put into getting this right in the interwar
: era. The technique wasn't used very much in
: WWII, but the Warspite did use its Swordfish
: plane for spotting during the second Narvik
: battle in 1940 for example.
: Shipboard planes tended to be multiseat ones
: so the pilot could do the piloting thing and
: the other guy could do the spotting thing.
: I would imagine that taking this
: pre-existing set of operational routines and
: applying it to static balloon usage would be
: a rather trivial task. The procedures were
: in place and personnel was already trained
: to do it.
