Hull leaks may have started the events causing the loss of SS Badger State in 1970

"The Fate of the Badger State
" in Naval Institute Proceedings
years ago described that the ammunition transport SS Badger State
(AP 175)) had underwater leaks in her hull at the outset of her fatal final voyage. One alarmed officer quit the ship.
Internal flooding means a free-surface liquid load, which amplifies rolling. Rolling of Badger State
during a storm overwhelmed the already inadequate fastenings of her cargo of USAF bombs and led ultimately to the abandonment of the ship and the loss of most of her crew. http://www.statesmarinelines.com/ships/badger_state.htm
