We stay in the Holiday Inn Express in Croydon, London which is a nice ten to fifteen minute train trip from the center of London. Its a filthy cheap price and includes a full cooked English breakfast and an on-site bar. Croydon is cleaning up in leaps and bounds (must have won some lottery money) so its quite attractive now.
For drinks later, you'll have to go to the Bletchley Room where you don uniform, and "break a code" to get your drinks. Very fun and entertaining. You will have a blast. Should you get to visit the Tower Of London, the Fusileer's have a private museum inside which contains a ton of stuff as well. To keep the mrs happy, I'd consider a trip to Hampton Court as well.
