...Elmer's Wood Glue. It may take two or more passes but it allows one to hit the seam without wiping out the engraving, whatever may be there. Mr. Surfacer is fine too; I don't like putty unless there's nothing to wipe out or I will be doing my own scribing.
On another note, I take cyano to resin kits, like that Quincy you sold me. For example, I take the thin stuff and wash splinter shields and the like with it to firm them up. It's strong and leaves little more than a very fine radius in the corners.
