Back in the 60s when many of the posters were kids or young men...

The USN had ships of steel in the '60s. Many were still of WWII vintage. They were tough, armored, fast. While not bristling with guns like in the '40s they still had a fair battery of heavy guns and fully automatic cannons. Face it, a Baltimore class cruiser was very tough looking and even a FRAMed Cleveland had a welter-weight look.
Now fast forward to 2017... Car Ferries.
