Battleship Cove is south of Boston in Fall River, Ma. In addition to the South Dakota class battleship, there is a WWII Balao class submarine (USS Lionfish) in (almost) WWII condition. The destroyer Joseph Kennedy (involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis) and a former East German frigate are also there. In the case of the battleship, you can enter one of the turrets, go onto the bridge and make it all the way down to one of the engine rooms. The steam systems are impressive and well labelled. Bonus is a very large & nice collection of models in the aft part of the Battleship from the IPMS Patriot's chapter.
North of the city in nearby Portsmouth NH is the USS Albacore with its unique hull shape. The sub sits high & dry on concrete cradles so you can see the hull design, and you can tour through the submarine. The twin diesels are the notorious rotary engine versions that crippled the early postwar Tang class subs.
