If the next-generation frigate is going to have a true ASW capability, it has to be designed from the keel up around the SQS-53 (3.5 kHz) series sonar. "Keel up" is a very operative phrase, as for example, the FFG 7 did not have the keel strength to backfit the large bow dome required by the SQS-26/53 series once we learned we had been scammed on the SQS-56. And that dome doesn't necessarily equate to a large ship - McCloy & Bronstein had SQS-26.
The other advantage of a dome that size is that if we can ever resurrect tactical Low Frequency Active (a post Cold War casualty), the transducer will require that size dome. The Multi-Function Towed Array, successor to the SQR-19, would be the receiver.
