Eyewitnesses are not infallible especially after the passage of time.
The "eyewitnesses" were interviewed after WW II ( I don't know the exact date but at least seven years have passed).
The "researchers" often do not do their due diligence. A often cited "fact" was that US soldiers found an Electra type aircraft on Saipan. They either ignored or did not know that the Japanese had built Electras under license from Lockheed, just as they had the DC-2 and DC-3 from Douglas.
