: At NARA II USA last week I was able to firmly
: establish when HMS VICTORIOUS was at
: Argentia during September 1943. I was also
: able to determine her escorts to that
: anchorage and when she departed. I realized
: that the SOPA ship at Argentia would have a
: good list of the ships coming and going from
: that base. So while at home I was able to
: determine that USS PRAIRIE (AR-15) was that
: ship until the end of September 1943. So I
: pulled her War Diary for September 1943.
: This is the image that I posted from my
: March trip to NARA II that started this
: search. HMS VICTORIOUS has been repainted
: to the camo pattern she had prior to
: operations with the USN in the Pacific.
: What I found in PRAIRIE's War Diary was
: To start off HMS OPPORTUNE stood in at
: Argentia at 0831 on 19 September 1943.
: Followed by HMS OBDURATE at 0834.
: Then at 1926 on 19 September 1943 HMS
: VICTORIOUS stood in at Argentina. Followed
: by USS ALBEMARLE (AV-5) AT 1937, USS BULMER
: (DD-222) at 1940, and USS BARKER (DD-213) at
: 1955. All four ships departed from Hampton
: Roads on 16 September 1943 together and
: arrived at Argentia on the 19th. So these
: USN ships also heading to the UK were the
: ASW escorts for HMS VICTORIOUS to Argentia.
: This answers which two Flush-Deckers are in
: the photo above. There were no other
: Flush-Deckers at Argentia on 19 or 20
: September 1943. Also, this photo has to
: have been taken on the 20th since they
: arrived late on the 19th.
: At some point on the 19th HMS CALDER (K.349)
: (miss spelled CAULDER in the War Diary)
: arrived at Argentia. It appears that this
: was the first voyage of the USA built
: CAPTAIN class Frigate to the UK. She
: commissioned in the RN on 15 July 1943.
: On 20 September 1943 HMS CALDER (K.349)
: departed Argentia at 1145, followed by HMS
: VICTORIOUS at 1153, HMS OBDURATE at 1155,
: and HMS OPPORTUNE at 1159. Therefore we
: have HMS VICTORIOUS ASW escorts back to the
: As a curiosity, note on the War Diary which
: ships arrived AFTER HMS VICTORIOUS departed.
