Do not see why the Long Lance Torpedo has such a reputation.

The long range was offset by even a slight deviation in target course, bearing and speed-whether made during the firing calculation or later by the target as part of normal combat maneuvers.
Even at short range the torpedoes would miss due to targeting errors. Example being Washington at 2nd Guadalcanal which was missed by torpedoes.
At Tassfaronga torpedoes hit the cruisers in the bow, except Northampton.
Too many variable in torpedo aiming.
It was a good torpedo, quick on short setting with a decent warhead.
