Since 47+ IJN A/C returned to their carriers with moderate to severe AA / pursuit-inflicted damage, did the figures cited include them?
The USN would not have known the # of IJN A/C damaged, given the volume and confusion of the attack.
: Page 272 has one table which states that
: 5" accounted for between 2.7 and 12.7
: kills. 3" between 3.7 to 15.3 kills.
: 1.1" 2.6 and 3.8. machine guns 4.7 and
: 28.4 Another report says the 5"
: accounted for 4.2 to 19.6. Machine guns for
: 4.8 to 29.0 and the 1.1" 6.3 to 19.1.
: You really need to read his chapter nine for
: how these numbers were arrived at.

: P-36 and P-40 pursuits which were able to
: launch and engage IJN carrier aircraft
: (P-36, 2 kills, P-40s, 7 or 8) at Pearl
: Harbor destroyed either 9 or 10 A6Ms and
: Which meant AA took down 19 or 20 of the
: total 29 IJN A/C lost in the attack.
: Is there any known breakdown which estimates
: what ship-based weapons were most effective?
: Water cooled M2 .50 machine guns were
: fastest to bring into action and likely did
: the most damage, but did some 1.1 quads get
: into action and were they effective?
: Only a guess, but 3" and 5" heavy
: AA would have been slower to get into
: service and not too effective against
: low-flying, nimble targets.
: Thank you.
