I have a high quality print of the photo showing the camouflage. If you mask the black shadow line outlining the number I think you will find that the number is in fact the same colour as the hull colour, a visual illusion. However , if you still feel that the number is lighter, be aware that hull colour while being white, was an off-white, ie, different from bright white.
