Prior to the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway, the Norfolk & Western Railway operated the former Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway from 1964 up through May 1990.
A new pictorial book measuring 12 inches by 9 inches, hardcover with dustcover, 144 pages of 157 pound acid free stock is currently at prepress being prepared for printing which is expected later this fall.
This new pictorial will span the timeline from 1979 through 1990 covering the entire 111 miles of former P&WV trackage, starting in Connellsville, then on West to Pittsburgh Junction with side trips on the Clairton, Mifflin and West End Branches and a side trip down the Rehobeth Spur. A few views of the abandoned Donora Branch are included before the rail was pulled up.
Also of interest will be a handful of early P&WV scenes taken at Bruceton, Curry, West Liberty and down on the West End Branch. There will also be one scene from 1936, one of a handful I uncovered years ago, taken along the Banksville Branch of the West Side Belt.
The Banksville Branch started out life in 1853 as the Little Saw Mill Run Railroad before being merged into the West Side Belt...then into the P&WV. There is still part of the little Saw Mill Run Railroad in existance down in Temperanceville, near Pittsburgh that was part of the West End Branch but now is being lost to the West End Circle construction.
The Banksville Branch was in disarray when the above photo was taken, but fortunately, the County of Allegheny Photographer recorded several right of way scenes before all was lost.
As a young boy prior to 1965 I lived just up the street from the near End of track of the Banksville Branch, never knowing much about it till later in life.
When I learn the book is going to print with a estimated delivery date, I will begin taking orders.
