No RR Joe, never read The Wolfe Finally Came, but I will. I did read the Norfolk & Western strike of 1978. Similiar in nature I'm sure, but Fishwick & Company not willing to be dictated by a Union, ran the railroad for 82 days.
In the N&W you had leaders able to see into the future and govern themselves accordingly, instead of sitting on their duffs allowing the company to fall into shambles, then calling out "We Need Help".
It takes talent, insight and initiative to stay ahead of the curve, and the N&W did it, give 'em credit. Look where they are at today !
If the steel mill is outdated, whose fault is that? All of those over paid white collars with ties should of addressed that problem 5 or 10 years ago. Now hundreds more out of work. I had a boss once who bragged about all of the places he closed. I wasn't impressed. I kept that statement in the forefront of my dealings with him. If he would of stated all of the problems he fixed, and all of the positive changes he made that reflected in a brilliant corporation as NS is today, well then you have MAN you look up too and respect. Instead, the company he ran into the ground is gone and so are the hundreds of good paying blue collar jobs all the while he patted himself on the back, lived in a big house on the hill, and drove the company car with all of the perky benefits that came with it.
