One man can move a couple freight cars with just a long crow-bar type device.

: To unload most rail cars into a silo
: would be done with a pneumatic
: blower. The blower would either come
: from a tractor source or a portable.
: Charged air would be injected into
: the car with pneumatic hoses and
: fittings. The sand which moves very
: easy would be pumped right into the
: silo. When I worked I did this with
: dry bulk cement, fly ash and sand
: plus ammonia nitrate. 85 ton of sand
: can be transferred in 2 hours or so
: depending on different things.

: Thanks for the explanation, but as
: much as I appreciate it, it still
: doesn't explain for certain what
: they're doing in Rook. I understand
: that you can use conveyors under the
: cars, but how would you get the sand
: from the conveyor and into the
: towers? Wouldn't a conveyor be more
: likely if they were loading right
: into trucks? If they use a hose,
: wouldn't you still pretty much need
: to have the car in front of the
: tower (or close)?
:
: I also understand that they can use
: different pieces of equipment to
: move the cars, but I have yet to see
: anything in the area. That's why I
: wondering if anyone knew for sure
: what they were doing in Rook. I
: don't mean to sound unappreciative.
: I'm just trying to learn how they're
: doing it there.

: As for unloading, there are
: conveyors
: that can be moved under the pockets
: on the cars for unloading and then
: removed when done, or the cars could
: be equipped with hose connections to
: be vacuum unloaded. As far as
: moving the hoppers without an
: engine, this can be done with a
: front end loader, trackmobile, and
: if they were really desperate it
: could be done using a chain and a
: semi truck.
: Sand from the car to truck would be
: done with a conveyor and silo to
: truck would be pneumatic.
