- The first railroad recieves the cars at Point A and takes them to their point B for switching.
- Then the first railroad puts them into a interchange train for railroad 2.
- Then the second railroad takes the cars from Point A to Point B.
- After switching at Point B, the cars go back to Point A and put onto a train for railroad 3.
- Railroad 2 takes the cars now in train 2 from Point A to railroad 3, Point A.
- Railroad 3 then takes the cars to point B for switching.
- Railroad 3 then blocks the cars at Point B for delivery point C, while enroute the cars pass near where their comodity will be used.
Once at delivery destination several days later, the customer unloads the cars, then has a trucking service reverse route the cars passing by where railroad 3 route 2 has their main track.
Now the Chief Train Dispatcher, the Movement Director, Marketing VP's, Customer Service Folks head home after a hard days work, panting what a great "customer service" oriented company they work for.
You, me and many others who cannot see the big picture, no doubt have no inclination on what we just saw happen in providing customer service. The railroad cars, loaded with a commodity that is fairly heavy requiring some extra horsepower, now just added several hundred extra gallons of wasted diesel fuel to move that tonnage. A couple eyars ago, that routing was no big deal, but now with diesel fuel nearing $5.00 per gallon, those extra wasted back and forth moves are costly.
But that big transportating giant, customer focused and customer satisifed adds fuel surcharges due to the run-away cost of fuel oil.
I understand the big picture.
