Steve Korff, 48, from Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, was in Chippewa Falls this past Saturday, to compete in the 2009 NASA Chippewa Classic Meet. At the 2008 NASA Chippewa Classic, Korff lifted Unequipped and won the Galileo Cup after the Galileo Factor was applied to edge out Equipped Lifter David Anderson. This past Saturday, however, it was unnecessary to use a multiplier to even the playing field, as Steve's coefficient was higher than any of the Equipped Lifters who wore Bench Shirts and Squat Suits. Korff thus won the Galileo Cup, outright, over all Lifters, Equipped or not.
Steve's best lifts included a 121 Lbs. Strict Curl, a 518 Lbs. Squat, a 314 Lbs. Benchpress, and a 513 Lbs. Deadlift, which combined for a Total of 1,466 Lbs. Korff competed at a bodyweight of 194 Lbs. and took first place in the Masters 198 Quadralifting Division, the Masters 40-49 198 Unequipped Powerlifting Division, and the Masters Pure 198 Unequipped Powerlifting Division. His Deadlift is a new American Record, and a new State Record, in the Master's Pure 198 Division.
78 year old Korean War Veteran Peter Jensen took 2nd place in the Masters 198 Lbs. Quadralifting Division, and 1st place in the Masters 4 Unequipped Powerlifting Division, the Masters 4 Power Sports Division, and the Masters 4 Push/Pull Division. Jensen's Squat of 231 Lbs. was sufficient, by 3 tenths of a pound, to keep him in the Quadralifting Event, which has minimum lift requirements. Peter's other lifts included an 88 Lbs. Strict Curl, a 193 Lbs. Benchpress, and a 342 Lbs. Deadlift, which combined for a Total of 832 Lbs. In addition to setting several Wisconsin State Records, Jensen's 231 Lbs. Squat was a new American Record in the Masters 70+ Unequipped Powerlifting Division. Peter competed at a bodyweight of 192.25 Lbs.
One of the most impressive Lifters of the day was Jennifer Ebanks, 27, from Milwaukee. The Event had 43 Entries, and Jennifer outsquatted many of the men lifting at the Event, with an Unequipped Squat of 457 Lbs. Her Unequipped Total of 1,102 Lbs., which edged out all Teen and Youth Lifters, as well as many of the adult male Lifters at the Meet, is sure to place her high on several of the National Rankings.
Many thanks to Jeff Phillips who came up from Sugar Grove, Illinois to Referee, as well as Referees Michael and Suzanne Jackson from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Bob Brodt, from Cadott, Wisconsin, both Reffed and competed in the Bench Only. Bob was also the Co-Organizer of the Event, handling the vast majority of details in preparation for Saturday's competition.
As is a tradition at the Chippewa Classic, the Centerpiece Award was a Broad Sword, which was picked up this year by Jon Riggs, from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, who had the second highest Coefficient in Quadralifting, with a Total of 1,664 Lbs.
Once again, 3 of the Sullivan Brothers, from right there in Chippewa Falls, lifted in the Meet. They also helped enormously as part of the tear-down and load-out crew, like they do every year, which makes it a pleasure to produce the Chippewa Classic.
Assistant Scoutmaster Scott Bromeisl's Boy Scout Troop #15 ran concessions as a Fundraiser for their unit. And numerous raffles were held throughout the day to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Bromeisl also competed and had the Largest Lifts of the day, with both Squats and Deadlifts of 628 Lbs., as well as a 534 Lbs. Benchpress.
The Event was Sponsored by the Chippewa Falls YMCA, as well as numerous Business Sponsors, and held at the Chippewa Falls Middle School. Approximately 50% of the Lifters were from right there in the Chippewa Falls area.
